- The Game of School is extremely prevalent in modern day society. It is seen when student work lacks quality and teachers lack enthusiasm. I personally see it in a lot of peers. In high school, I knew of many kids who would look up answers online to homework or share their homework answers with others to minimize their work load. Much like this author mentioned with the elementary school students, students find ways to get credit for assignments without actually learning. In high school, I sometimes found myself doing this with homework. It was mainly because I was taking so many advanced course that it was impossible to put in the necessary for effort for each class and still have to time to sleep. My problem was that by the time I got to high school, I already understood how my own mind learned. Many times I found the homework to be an obstacle in my studies. If I was able to get it "out of the way," then I would have time to study the way I wanted to and the way that worked best for me. Being a student at URI is different, because now homework isn't regularly checked. It is up to the student to learn what they can. I find it much easier to actually delve into my learning. Also the fact that each class doesn't meet everyday, gives me more time to devote to each class and really absorb information. I think the Game of School needs to be acknowledged in order to improve the education system. We need to indicate what children find to be pointless and then replace those "pointless" activities with something that will engage them. We also need to stop placing all of the blame on teachers and acknowledge that some students just don't want to learn. If we focus the attention on improving students rather than punishing teachers, the education system would improve greatly.
